Boğaziçi University Alumni Association (BÜMED) was founded in 1985. The starting point of the Association is to keep Boğaziçi University community together and maintain alumni’s relation to the University after graduation. The Association has more than 15.000 members and supports Boğaziçi University with its effective services which hold community together.

Considering its students, faculty members and alumni, Boğaziçi University is one of the most prominent institutions in Turkey.

In order for Boğaziçi University to develop itself in the world standards and thus contribute to the development of Turkey as well, the mission falls to all Boğaziçi members. The Mission of Boğaziçi University Alumni Association is to continue the relationships of graduates with one another and with university. By this means, it organizes the assignment of duties among graduates and helps them fulfill these duties to make Boğaziçi University an outstanding institution in education and research in the international platform. 

The idea of founding an association which would gather all Boğaziçi University and Robert College graduates together under the same roof was proposed for the first time in 1982. 

As the conditions of the time were not very encouraging for founding an association, legalization of alumni-related activities became possible only through the foundation of a company. For this purpose, a company named Boğaziçi Advertising and Promotion Inc. was founded exclusively with the participation of alumni. The status of Boğaziçi University Alumni Association was also prepared at the same in case the prohibition of founding an association was lifted.  This foundation working as Alumni Office started a campaign to reach all BU and RC graduates and eventually prepared an “Alumni Catalogue” by getting in touch with almost 5200 graduates. 

Since 1984, the endeavors to establish an association started to become concrete. Following the call to 114 graduates from different periods to discuss the status, the first official meeting was held in Kennedy Lodge in March 16, 1985 and the Association was actually founded. 

After the application to Association Desk, registration procedure was completed in Nov. 12, 1985 and the foundation of BÜMED was legalized. First General Meeting was held in Jan. 18, 1986.  

During the process of foundation, many graduates and faculty members contribute to the realization of BÜMED. Some of them are Halit Kurdoğlu, Mehmet Bayraktaroğlu, Nazım Aksoy, Yavuz Otar, Serap Bürülkara, Oya Kösemen, İpek Demirtaş, Ali Erener, Necati Güler, Faruk Bayır, Haşim Durusel, Sinan Ilgaz, Uluğ Atay, Erdem Öktemus, Yağmur Denizhan, Nur Birgül, Canan Odabaşı, Sevgi Bilge, Sevgi Gençsoy, Mehmet Kabasakal, Özlem Öktemus, Ayla Yeşilyurt, Emel Bayrı, Fahri Arıkan, Semih Tezcan...

South Campus Lodging No: 6 was rented for the Association with the aid of Prof. Dr. Ergün Toğrol, the rector at the time. The restaurant in the garden was opened in the summer of 1987. The number of BÜMED members increased considerably after that time. The number of members which was 969 in 1986 was gradually increased to 2539 in 1987, 3715 in 1988 and 4860 in 1990. 

Since its foundation in 1985, BÜMED has been working incessantly to keep Boğaziçi community together and support the development of the University. In order to maintain the communication among the community members and inform alumni about the activities held in Boğaziçi University, the idea of publishing a magazine was put forward. At that time, BÜMED was a newly founded association. However, the difference of Boğaziçi was discerned here and the first issue of the Boğaziçi Magazine was published in 1988.  “OUR FIRST ISSUE in the 125th Anniversary of our University and 3rd Anniversary of our Association” was written on the cover of the issue.  

Boğaziçi Magazine was published once in every 3 years between 1988 and 1999 and during that time it was completely a product of volunteer work. Saadet Kuyumcu was in charge of the magazine for 10 years and she contributed a lot to the continuation of it.  

The success of Boğaziçi Magazine together with the increase in the number of BÜMED members and the extension of the facilities led Administrative Body to decide to publish the magazine monthly in 2000. From that time on, the magazine was sent only to BÜMED members who paid their dues. The design, preparation and publication of the magazine were conducted by a professional company. The content is formed by Editorial Board consisting of volunteer members and the coordination is ensured by the related person in BÜMED professional team.   

BURC Beach

With its magnificent beach, sunbathing area of 1400 square meters, a cafeteria for 200 people, a parking lot for 650 cars, bar, fish restaurant, a store containing beach materials, deck chairs, straw umbrellas, mattresses, showers and cabins, BURCBeach provide you with a comfortable and enjoyable holiday. It is open between 09:00 and 21:30 every day and only 30 minutes away from Istanbul.

BURC Restaurant

BURC Restaurant serves for Boğaziçi community and their guests with its special menu and outstanding atmosphere. Every year, special programs are prepared for important events such as New Year, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Special Brunch on Sundays during summer months, Concert nights, Activity Days and swimming pool are just some of the facilities offered by BURC Restaurant.   

BURC Sport  

BURC Sport members can benefit from the facilities such as Gym & Cardio, Squash, Sauna, Open Swimming Pool, Closed Swimming Pool, Tennis, Massages, Group Lessons, Vibro Gym, Personal Training and Dietician with UNO.  

BÜMED Career Center

BÜMED Career Center cooperates with a lot of leading companies to support Boğaziçi graduates during their critical decision processes and career changes. From this perspective, we help companies to assemble constantly developing and high performance teams and contribute to their growth. Compared to the other career centers, the most distinguishing features of BÜMED career center are the supply of qualified candidates, good service and reputation. Fundamentally, the mission of BÜMED Career Center is to provide human resources services. Within the framework of this mission, we give consultancy services to the companies and guide our graduates in their career choices. Our rich database includes new and old graduates from all departments. We not only provide good candidates for appropriate position, but also, analyze the leadership capacities of the companies, support the recruitment of new talents and try to make them more capable and indispensible.       

Moreover, we support the personal development of our students and graduates with some programs, workshops and seminars such as Mentoring Program, BU 309-409 Introduction to Business Life seminars and K2K (From Campus to Career) project. 

Homecoming

Homecoming, the greatest organization of our Association, is held traditionally every year on the South Campus and hosts more than 8.000 students and graduates. Every year, a platform is established in front of the steps in the South Campus and there are activities for 12 hours. Finally, this unforgettable day is ended with a great concert. The purpose of the event is to celebrate this day like a carnival and remind our graduates of their student days.  

We announce this event to our graduates with our monthly issue Boğaziçi Magazine, portal, e-bulletin, private mailings for the event and SMS. The event includes dance and theatre performances, competitions, open air film screenings, and basketball and football matches of BU graduates. Apart from these, the competitions and animations organized by sponsor companies and brands make the more lively and enjoyable. 

The companies which take the sponsorship of this event will have chance to access one of the greatest communities of our country directly and have some privileges before and after the event. 

Kids Carnival and Summer Schools Promotion Day

Boğaziçi University Alumni Association welcomes its members and BU graduates to “Kids Carnival and Summer Schools Promotion Day” in BÜMED Garden where they can have a joyful day with their kids and choose an appropriate summer program for them. During this special day, BU graduates have opportunity to get informed about the outstanding summer schools in Istanbul and select a school which suits best to the capabilities and needs of their children. In Kids Carnival, many activities and entertainments such as animation, theatre, pony, voyage to the planets, miniature train, huge inflatable toys are included.  

The event is announced via Boğaziçi Magazine, portal, e-bulletin and private mailings for the event. The schools participating in the event have a chance to introduce themselves efficiently and appropriately to more than 1.500 people of Boğaziçi community.  

Reunion Dinner

Our graduates celebrating their 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th anniversary of their graduation come together with the friends in the Reunion Dinner every year and feel nostalgia with different surprises and music.

The companies and brands taking the sponsorship of this special event will have chance to get in contact with graduates from different periods and departments who are now executives in various companies and doing their own business. 

Orientation Party

New Boğaziçi students start their new life with a lively welcome in BÜMED Orientation Party which is held traditionally every year in BÜMED Garden. 

These successful students who gain access to education in the best university of Turkey not only entertain themselves with DJ music, various treats and gifts, but also get informed about the activities of BÜMED which will always support them during their studentship and afterwards.

Graduation Party

New Boğaziçi graduates celebrate the first night of their graduation with their friends in BÜMED Graduation Party which is traditionally organized by BÜMED every year. 

During this special night, BU graduates enjoy themselves with delicious food, music and dance and all the activities and entertainments are arranged for free by BÜMED. Moreover, various gift drawings add some additional excitement to the event. 

The sponsors of Graduation Party have direct access to BU graduates on the verge their new life and get acquainted with them.

Voluntary Work

As the efficiency of Non-governmental Institutions are increasing day by day in the world, BU graduates engage in voluntary activities through BÜMED and aim to contribute the well-being of the society. 

Most of the projects held in BÜMED came into existence with the voluntary work of our graduates and became very successful due to their efforts. The best example of this is the Editorial Board of Boğaziçi Magazine which is published since 1988. Other voluntary activities can be listed as mentoring program, BU 309-409 Introduction to Business Life Seminars and BUmanzara volunteer group.
